Dell and its local partners are providing a free computer recycling event and “Community Green Day” for residents of the Piedmont Triad. Why are Dell and its partners doing this? To ensure computers don't go into landfills and to raise awareness of responsible computer disposal options. What happens to the computers after the recycling event? Computers collected at Saturday’s event will be responsibly recycled. Through a Dell-certified recycling vendor, and our recycling partner, Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC, approximately 98% of the computer can be reused or recycled back into raw materials – glass into glass, metals into metals, plastics into plastics. What happens to computers that are still working? Dell’s certified recycling vendor will assess the value and reuse options of all materials collected at the event. Some computers will find “new life” as parts in other types of products. Are old computers safe? While computers are safe to use, they do contain some environmentally sensitive materials which should not go into landfills. That's why Dell and its partners are educating consumers about how to safely and responsibly recycle computers. Are the computers collected at the event tax deductible? Since the actual value of a computer cannot be assessed on site by event personnel, no tax receipts can be offered to participants in this event. Can businesses and schools bring their computers by to be recycled? Within reason. This recycling event is primarily intended for consumers. Dell offers a program called Asset Recovery Services, which makes it easy and affordable for businesses and schools to dispose of their institutional IT assets. Dell will include pre-paid shipping labels and instructions in the new system’s box for those who indicate they plan to recycle a system.
