Westminster Dog Show Fun Facts

Before you view this week's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, brush up on a few fun facts about the canine competition:

  • The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, first held in 1877, is America's second-longest continuously held sporting event.
  • America's oldest organization dedicated to purebred dogs, the Westminster Kennel Club was established in 1877.
  • The Westminster Dog Show was first telecasted in 1948.
  • Westminster sold out Madison Square Garden in 2005 and 2006.
  • In 2004, the Empire State Building lit its tower in purple and gold, Westminster's colors. It will do so again in 2007.
  • Through 2006, a total of 288,996 dogs have entered in Westminster's 130 shows.
  • The Fox Terrier (wire) has won the most Best In Show crowns with 13. Rounding out the most-decorated breeds are Scottish Terriers (seven) Spaniels (five), Airedale Terriers (four), Boxers (four) and Doberman Pinschers (four).
  • The Terriers have been the most successful group at Westminster, claiming 44 Best In Show titles.
  • The oldest dog to win Best In Show was a Papillon in 1999 at 8 years, 1 month and 10 days of age.
  • The youngest dog to win Best In Show was a Collie in 1929 at 9 months of age.
  • The winningest dog in Westminster history is Ch. Warren Remedy, a Fox Terrier, who won Best In Show in 1907, 1908 and 1909.
