MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- A Mount Airy man is recovering in a Winston-Salem hospital after an outbuilding fell on him Monday around noon.During an attempt to move an approximately 12-by-12-foot or larger wood outbuilding on Centerwood Drive off North Franklin Road, the 59-year-old man was pinned under the structure after it fell over while three or four men were trying to position it, said John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services. The man was pinned for a short time from his pelvis down.“He was extremely lucky,” Shelton said, noting that there were two or three other men with him who worked quickly to get the building jacked up off of the man before any emergency responders could get on the scene.
The man, whose named was not released due to patient privacy laws, was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center by Surry County EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. Shelton said Monday evening that it was his understanding the man was “doing OK.”Members of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry EMS assisted on the scene. This article appeared in Tuesday's edition of the Mount Airy News.
