Federal Report Highlights Flaws In N.C. Probation System

Findings Released Tuesday

POSTED: 2:49 am EDT August 20, 2008

A federal report which highlights flaws in North Carolina's probation system points to officers dealing with heavy caseloads, high turnover and an archaic computer system.

The National Institute of Corrections was called in last spring to do an independent evaluation of the state's probation system after problems were exposed in the handling of the suspects accused of killing Eve Carson, student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

One suspect also stands accused of killing Abhijit Mahato, a Duke University graduate student.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that the federal review and findings released Tuesday are to serve as the backbone for how to allocate the $2.5 million that state legislators added this summer to the state probation system's budget.
