Crew's Schelotto Named MLS Player Of The Week

POSTED: 6:33 pm EDT August 25, 2008

(Sports Network) - Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto collected his third Major League Soccer Player of the Week award on Monday, tying Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan for the most this year.

Schelotto, who previously won MLS Player of the Week in Weeks 3 and 17, had one goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday to claim the honor for Week 22.

Columbus signed Schelotto early last season and he's won the weekly award five times in two seasons in MLS. He was Columbus Most Valuable Player last season and was named to the league's Best XI team.

Schelotto had five goals and 11 assists last season, and has five goals and an MLS-high 14 assists this year. The Argentinean is one assist shy of the Crews single-season record of 15 set by John Wilmar Perez in 2001.

On Saturday, the Crew took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute thanks to Schelotto. He drew a foul from 25 yards left of goal and placed the ensuing free kick with pinpoint accuracy, finding defender Chad Marshall at the back post for an easy header past Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

"I know he's [Schelotto] looking for me in the box and he served in a great ball," Marshall said. "I saw earlier that it was going to go far post so I faked inside then went back and it was a perfect ball; it was a pretty easy finish."

Then, just 10 minutes later, midfielder Eddie Gaven was taken down by a RSL defender as he tried to cut back on the right side of the box. The referee emphatically pointed for a penalty kick, and Schelotto confidently stepped up and converted his fourth penalty goal in as many tries this season, to double the lead.

"The secret is to be relaxed when you take the ball," Schelotto said.

Schelotto was at it again in the 55th minute, sending a leading pass down the right flank to Gaven. After controlling the service, Gaven drove a seeking cross into the box, which found Brad Evans at the penalty spot for a crisp header to give the Crew their final goal.

"The third goal was as well played a goal as you could get," Crew coach Sigi Schmid said. "It was a ball from Guillermo to Eddie but Eddie made a run to get behind. Eddie's cross was right in the box. That's the way you draw it up on the board."
