To ensure a safe, enjoyable and trouble-free trip in your automobile, the following items should be checked by an auto mechanic:

Get a thorough tune-up.

Check your brakes, and replace brake fluid if necessary.

Check transmission, radiator, power steering and windshield wiper fluid levels.

Check oil level.

Check tire pressure and inspect the tires for signs of wear.

Check belts for worn and frayed areas.

Check hoses for bulges or spongy feel; check hose clamps to be sure they are securely attached.

Check air and oil filters and change if necessary.

Check windshield wiper blades and replace if worn.

Check all lights, interior and exterior. Don’t forget brake lights, turn signals and flashers.

Vehicle registration and proof of vehicle ownership
Vehicle insurance card
Credit card and auto club card, if applicable
Spare tire and tool kit
First-aid kit
Jack, lug wrench, jumper cables, flashlight
Road flares
